Flash Problem

So im doing the most basic thing in Flash... putting a bunch of images in one layer, and having 2 buttons to go Next and Previous. when i did this same thing earlier in Flash 8 everything worked fine. Now i come home and try to do it in Flash 2004 MX it tells me this:

**Error** Scene=Scene 1, layer=Layer 5, frame=1:Line 1: Statement must appear within on handler
nextFrame();

**Error** Scene=Scene 1, layer=Layer 6, frame=1:Line 1: Statement must appear within on handler
prevFrame();

Total ActionScript Errors: 2 Reported Errors: 2[/b]

can anyone explain to me what im doing wrong please?
