interview: Featured Artist Interview by Jay Cline on 30.11.09
Hey Parker, congrats on being the featured artist of Personality! Were you shocked when you found out?
Yes, Very shocked. As a newcomer to the group and the history KV has it was a surprise!
How did you get started doing digital art? How long have you been designing?
I started doing digital art in 2004. I originally planned to be a programmer, due to some conflicts with my local school I dropped programming in the started doing graphics. I had started some in late 2002 with basic skinning and such on forums and eventually moved into digital art. I have been doing conceptual digital art for awhile now, probably going on three or four years. I must say that I have come a long way since I started.
What previous experience or training do you have with Digital art?
I for the more part am completely self-taught with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Cinema4d. I learned a few tricks at the college I attend (Iowa State University) but nothing major. Starting early with all these programs was definitely beneficial later on when starting conceptual art.
What would you say fuels your creativity? And what role does music play into your art work?
I would have to say life in general fuels me. Also the biggest thing to me that fuels me is the fact that I have two spectrums of digital art to compare to. I compare myself to my classmates at school, as well as artists internationally through the art groups that I am in today. Music plays a huge role in my art; I definitely have to have something going when I’m doing my thing on screen. I listen to many different genres. I thoroughly enjoy metal, nu-metal, and a lot of electronic.
So when you start a piece, what exactly would you say is your creative process from start to finish? Does it ever change?
My process is crazy really, since the majority of my art is abstract I often see an idea in my head…roll with it and eventually step away from it and come back to it, it’s a never-ending process. The hardest part is staying efficient with my personal level of consistency. I’m trying to keep myself to a standard so I often have to step to and from my work so I look at it from a different perspective.
So when someone sees your work, what do you want him or her to walk away with?
I want them to walk away from it knowing they’ve seen something different, a different style than the usual that you see around the digital art scene.
In your piece “play” what was the concept behind this?
I had actually gotten out of an art history lecture about cubism. I took it pretty literally and went with the shape-repetition method and based my composition on that.
Is this a particular style you feel you may be drawn too more so than any other abstract styles?
Not exactly sure, I experiment a lot. I am in the process of style development. Trying new things is definitely a must for me. Trying to set yourself apart from other artists is a must these days.
Which artists have influenced you as a digital artist? How have they impacted your taste for digital art?
Dopamin, d3vulge, genesis, and aeiko are all artists that have influenced me and/or actually helped me throughout my digital art career. They have all impacted my taste in different way, I definitely look up to these artists as they have all defined and made a name for themselves throughout their careers as well. They have a style they stick to and you could definitely pick their work out of a lineup.
What’s your plan after you graduate from school?
When I graduate I plan on moving to the Chicago area, living in Iowa as you could imagine is limited as far as clientele goes. I do a lot of work for local bands in the area. I have actually been in touch with Hurley International as well as other big clothing companies and will be sending work to them for review around Summer 2010.
I’d like to personally thank you for the interview as well as joining Konvulse, any last words?
No, thank you for the opportunity to share my art internationally with other people. I’d like to end with a quote that I personally enjoy because originality is definitely hard to come by these days: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.”- Jean-Luc Goddard
